Description
A foot ulcer is where an area of skin is broken down and you can see the underlying tissue. Foot ulcers are more common if you have diabetes because the sensation is reduced in your feet or there is reduced circulation. Frequently poor fitting shoes or abnormal pressure on boney prominences of the foot produces skin breakdown.
Symptoms
Reddened or open area usually on the bottom of the foot. Usually there is no pain because of the impaired sensation.
What to expect from therapy
The physical therapist will assist in the recommendation of appropriate footwear. The therapist will develop and exercise program that will increase flexibility and strength of the lower extremity.
