Balance, Dizziness and Motion Sickness Program

People with balance and dizziness problems can have difficulty with the simplest of tasks. HealthReach’s BALANCE, DIZZINESS AND MOTION SICKNESS PROGRAM is a multi-focused approach that helps align the three components of balance: your eyes, your musculoskeletal system, and your inner ear.

When these three systems are not working in a coordinated manner, balance problems can cause major disruptions in daily life. An increased risk for falls, shortened attention spans, abnormal sleep patterns and excessive fatigue can all result from balance disorders. Significant advances in the evaluation and treatment of balance disorders, though, have proven to be highly effective in offering relief.

Who can benefit from treatment?
Children or adults who experience:

  • Dizziness/vertigo
  • Motion sensitivity
  • Car sickness
  • Positional vertigo/postural vertigo
  • Repeated falls
  • Persistent unsteadiness or dizziness after leg injury, accident or surgery
  • Unsteadiness during walking
Individuals with:
  • History of inner ear infection
  • Neuritis, labyrinthitis
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
  • Central conditions such as cerebellar dysfunction, multiple sclerosis, head trauma/brain injury, and stroke
  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Vestibular hypofunction

How can HealthReach help?
Dizziness and balance problems are often based on multiple factors. The most effective treatment for many patients is a comprehensive, evidence-based approach. Because we combine the latest technology with personal expertise, HealthReach therapists help you gain an awareness of your body while providing instruction and education to selfmanage your condition. As a result, restored function and enhanced quality of life can be achieved.

HealthReach therapists also perform periodic reassessments to monitor and evaluate treatment effectiveness, or provide followup for chronic conditions.

What treatment is best for you?
Before you are treated, you will be evaluated to determine the proper, individualized course of treatment. This comprehensive assessment will include conventional therapeutic tests and quantitative assessment of balance impairment using the latest technology. Baseline information will be collected as appropriate to monitor progress in a treatment program.

Treatment may include the following:

  • Vestibular rehabilitation
  • Individualized exercises that can include:
    • Neck exercises
    • Eye exercises(oculomotor)
    • Inner ear exercises
  • Muscle strengthening
  • Balance retraining
  • Canalith repositioning procedures (Epley maneuver) for BPPV
  • Education in compensation/safety techniques
  • Patient education in anatomy and function of the vestibular and balance system
  • Ongoing feedback on performance and progress
  • Resource base for other services
  • Referrals to other health care providers

Individual training and support is provided by licensed occupational and physical therapists that specialize in vestibular rehabilitation and treatment of balance-related problems.
